PONTE CAFFARO, ITALY
February, 2006

Ponte Caffaro is a town of about 1,000 by a lake high in the Dolomite Mountains east of Milano. Carnivale (similar to Mardi Gras) is celebrated here each year with traditional dances and music played on fiddles, guitars and basses.

See these websites for more details.

This February a group of American and Italian musicians and educators were invited to create a weekend seminar that took place as Carnivale approached. The goal was to lay the groundwork for a summer music and dance camp in 2007 at a currently unoccupied mountain monastery. It's hoped that the program will offer both American and local Italian traditions to students from around the world.

It was cold in the mountains, but stunningly beautiful. The people were warm and friendly and the music, food and wine were wonderful.
